Jakarta, IO – Several civil society elements together with domestic workers carried out a hunger strike and set up tents in front of the parliament compound, Monday (14/8).

Plates and several objects were lined up under the tent as a symbol of protest to urge the House of Representatives (DPR) to immediately pass the bill on domestic worker protection into law, per Tribunnews.

Lita Anggraini, coordinator of the National Advocacy Network for Domestic Workers, explained that the objects symbolized their struggle. “These empty plates mean they struggle to put food on the able. The clock signifies long working hours and the lack of time for them to care for their children,” explained Lita.

“Meanwhile, the chains became a symbol of them being shackled by violent employers. It also show them being held captive, isolated, denied food, even to the point of starvation. Pacifiers and napkins mean they still need to continue working even though no one is taking care of their children.” (at)
