Bahasa Indonesia designated as one of the official languages ​​of UNESCO General Assembly

Jakarta, IO – The Indonesian language (Bahasa Indonesia) has officially become one of the official languages ​​at the UNESCO General Assembly. This was announced at the Plenary Session of the 42nd UNESCO General Conference in Paris, France on Tuesday (20/11).

This makes Indonesian the 10th official language of the UNESCO General Assembly alongside English, French, Arabic, Chinese, Russian, Spanish, Hindi, Italian and Portuguese, per Kemlu.go.id, Wed (21/11).

Mohamad Oemar, Indonesia’s Permanent Delegation to UNESCO, explained that the submission of a proposal was submitted in January this year.

With this designatiom, it is hoped that the use of Indonesian, now spoken by more than 275 million people, will have a positive impact on efforts to achieve world peace.

“The recognition of Indonesian as the official language of the UNESCO General Conference will have a positive impact on peace, harmony and the achievement of sustainable development goals not only at the national level, but also globally,” said Oemar.

Ambassador Oemar also emphasized that efforts to increase awareness of the Indonesian language are part of Indonesia’s efforts to build an international partnership network and strengthen cooperation with UNESCO.
