Uniting to Preserve Indonesian Culture, Several Celebrities Appear in the Ketoprak Dance of Retno Dumilah, Srikandi from Madiun

Jakarta, IO – Gending Enem Studio together with the SMAN 6 Jakarta Alumni Association or commonly called Sixerhood and Yasma 6 (SMAN 6 Jakarta Alumni Foundation) initiated the Ketoprak Dance Retno Dumilah performance in commemoration of the 78th Independence Day of the Republic of Indonesia as a form of contribution in preservation of Indonesian culture, especially the culture of classical Javanese dance.

Collaborating with Wayang Orang Bharata, Retno Dumilah’s performance was supported by around 150 dancers and musicians consisting of dance lovers both beginners and professionals, celebrities Maudy Koesnaedi, Ira Wibowo, Dewi Gita, Metta Ariesta, Chitra Nartomo, Prof. Hikmahanto Juwana, S.H., LL.M, Ph.D and Prof. Dr. Achsanul Qosasi, as well as elementary, middle and high school students in DKI Jakarta.

Retno Dumilah’s Ketoprak dance will be held at the Jakarta Big Theatre, Taman Ismail Marzuki, Central Jakarta, on Sunday, August 27 2023 at 15.00–18.00. This performance invites the audience to enjoy the dance of the heroic story of Srikandi from Madiun in leading female warriors against the troops of the Mataram Kingdom.

This play is appointed to interpret the struggle for the sovereignty of the Madiun land area. Besides that, there are values about gender equality that have lived in our society since the 16th century. As part of history, Retno Dumilah is a representation of gender equality, emancipation and women’s empowerment which is very relevant to the current reality, also in line with the spirit of the sovereign 78th Indonesian Independence Day to continue moving towards an advanced Indonesia.

As a form of our contribution to cultural preservation, we present this Ketoprak Dance performance with the hope of providing positive energy for art lovers of various age groups and especially the dance community while embracing culture,” said Hendro Prastowo, Chair of the Retno Dumilah Performance Committee.

“Preserving cultural values will strengthen national identity and character. The value content that can be taken from the character Retno Dumilah can be used as a guide, reference, or reference for building self-character. We hope to have a positive impact on the younger generation who participate in this activity, both as event supporters and as spectators,” said Prof. Hikmahanto Juwana, General Chair of Sixerhood for the 2022-2025 period.
