UAE Plans to Build Giant Data Center in Indonesia

Jakarta, IO – The United Arab Emirates (UAE) Ministry of Investment and the Ministry of State-Owned Enterprises (BUMN) Mohamed Hassan Alsuwaidi signed an agreement to build a data center with a total capacity of up to 1,000 MW in Indonesia.

The agreement was a manifestation of increasingly close bilateral relations between Indonesia and UAE, especially in the digital economy sector, per CNBC Indonesia, Tue (12/12).

“We are committed to supporting and accelerating all development efforts in Indonesia, and this agreement will contribute to facilitating increased data center capacity, with new facilities that promise to open up opportunities that strengthen the country’s path to a prosperous future,” he said.

Data centers is a key component of the digital economic infrastructure in Indonesia, the fourth most populous country in the world. Moreover, this industry continues to be promoted by the government with the proliferation of startup companies.

Based on the MoU signed by representatives of both parties, this agreement includes investment partnerships, policy research collaboration, certification development, innovation, and research and development.

Likewise, Indonesian SOE Minister Erick Thohir said that this agreement would strengthen Indonesia’s leadership in the data center sector in Southeast Asia, through PT Telkom Indonesia (Persero).

“Telkom has made optimal investment to ensure its data centers support Indonesia’s digital economy, which is on course to become the largest in Southeast Asia,” he added. (bp)
