Train crashes into minibus in Lumajang, killing 11

Jakarta, IO – As many as 11 passengers traveling in a minibus died and four seriously injured after it was hit by the Probowangi train in Ranupakis village, Lumajang regency, East Java, Sun (19/11).

The collision occurred when the train serving the Ketapang (Banyuwangi)-Surabaya route was traveling from east to west. At the same time, the minibus was traveling from south to north, crossing the gateless railroad, per CNN Indonesia, Sun (20/11).

State-owned railway company PT KAI region 9 spokesperson Anwar Yuli Prasetyo said the driver had sounded the horn, but it was too late.

Anwar explained that after the incident, the engine driver stopped the train to check the track. Once confirmed safe, he drove to the next station and reported the incident.

Anwar said that the journey of several trains at the scene after the accident continued to run normally. He also appealed to the public to be careful when crossing railway track because a train cannot stop promptly.

“Make sure the track you are crossing is safe, then look right and left, and obey the signs so that the accident like the one in Lumajang can be avoided,” said Anwar. (un)
