“The internet and gadgets have become more familiar to teenagers during the pandemic. Rapid technological advances demand teachers actively participate in advising students to only use gadgets wisely,” said Ruth.

Secretary of the Psychology Undergraduate Study Program/Clinical Psychologist, Faculty of Psychology UNIKA Atma Jaya, Nanda Rosalia stated that young learners and higher-level students are subject to the downsides of gadgets more than reaping the benefits. Added to that, the current addicted generation would feel lost without access to gadgets.

Good use of positive technology, in tune with an applied scientific approach, will improve the quality of personal experience for a more prosperous, strong and resilient society.

There are at least three attractions of positive technology for teenagers. First, amusement and comfort. Teens often need to make themselves feel comfortable, happy, and have other positive emotions. Listening to their favorite music and playing games are among these amusements.

Second, self-development, aiming to find meaning. Activities categorized into these activities include learning via YouTube and Google, developing hobbies and skills, joining e-training and other rewarding activities. Third, for socializing and connecting with other people or communities, participating and sharing experiences and stories through social media and social fundraising.

“Physical, cognitive, and socioemotional changes affect the social life of today’s youth. Peers influence is considerably stronger than that of family. Teenagers use technology and social media in finding their identity, community and an environment they feel comfortable in,” said Nanda.
