Sexual violence allegation proven, inactive BEM UI chairman suspended for 6 months

Jakarta, IO – Melki Sedek Huang, the inactive chairman of the University of Indonesia’s Student Executive Body (BEM UI) was proven to have committed sexual violence. As a result, the faculty of law student will be suspended for one semester.

The decision was issued by UI rector Ari Kuncoro based on UI Rector Decree 49/2024, per Detikcom, Thu (1/2). This was confirmed by UI spokesperson Amelita.

Melki was found guilty as charge following the investigation by the university’s Sexual Violence Prevention and Handling Task Force as well as pieces of evidence and witness statements.

Melki is also prohibited from contacting or being in proximity to the victim in any form and to set his foot on the campus ground during the suspension period, except for attending counselling sessions about sexual violence conducted by the university.

“He is banned to be active formally and informally in student organizations and activities at the study program, faculty and university levels, and within the University of Indonesia campus,” read the decree. (un)
