Painting by Bandung artist sells for Rp11b at auction in Singapore

Jakarta, IO – Christine Ay Tjoe, an artist from Bandung, auctioned off his works at the Sotheby’s Asia event held at Marina Bay Sands, Singapore, Sunday (2/7).

Tjoe’s painting dubbed “The Team of Red” which he created in 2013, was sold for Rp11 billion.  Initially, the work was offered at the price tag of between Rp7.2 billion to Rp14.4 billion, per Katadata, Tuesday (4/7).

Sotheby’s is a prestigious exhibition of paintings and luxury items. In 2023, it is holding an Auction of Modern and Contemporary Art to celebrate its 50th anniversary in Asia.

Christine Ay Tjoe is known as an abstract expressionist painter. She first exhibited her works in 1999. Tjoe graduated from the Faculty of Art and Design, Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB).

The 49-year-old woman’s works are frequently exhibited at international exhibitions and fetch high prices at various auction centers, such as Christie’s and Sotheby’s Hong Kong.

In 2007, she won the Philips Morris Indonesia Art Award. The following year, she received an award for her solo role titled ‘Interiority of Hope’ at the Emitan Gallery in Surabaya.

The following year, Tjoe became a residency artist at STPI Gallery, Singapore. In 2009, she was awarded the SCMP Art Futures Prize Winner at the Hong Kong Art Fair. (un)
