Malang Customs confiscates illegal cigarettes worth Rp1.44b

Jakarta, IO – In a raid, Malang Customs and Excise Agency managed to impound illegal goods worth more than Rp1.44 billion which could potentially cost the state Rp768 million in lost revenue.

Head of the Malang Customs and Excise Agency Gunawan Tri Wibowo said the operation began when officers received a report regarding a truck transporting illegal cigarettes in the Krebet area, Bululawang district, per Detikcom, Wednesday (1/11).

“Officers carried out land patrols in the area that was the target of the operation and found a truck that was suspected of carrying illegal cigarettes,” he said.

After inspection, officers managed to find 34,380 packs of illegal machine-made kretek cigarettes (SKM) of various brands with a total of 687,600 cigarettes without excise stamp duty.

The officers also found a car carrying illegal cigarettes in Kedungkandang district, Malang city.  The car allegedly tried to sell hundreds of thousands of illegal cigarettes.

The agency also obtained information on the distribution of illegal cigarettes from the Illegal Cigarette Application (SIROLEG).

“Out of the several shops searched, officers managed to confiscate 2,700 illegal cigarettes, while on Thursday officers checked a freight service and found 191,600 illegal cigarettes,” revealed Gunawan. (bp)
