Let’s Judge By the Facts, Not Opinion

James Van Zorge
James Van Zorge, is a Business consultant in Indonesia that has worked for the Harvard Institute for International Development, Food and Agriculture Organization, McKinsey & Co., and A.T.Kearney’s Global Business Policy Institute. He completed his BA in International Relations, summacum laude, at the State University of New York at Albany, and he holds a Masters of Public Policy, International Economics, from the Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University

On the contrary, it is completely possible that Marcos Jr. will enter the palace and keep in mind the mistakes his father made during his 21 years in office. Marcos Jr. could decide to prove his detractors wrong by doing things such as putting a halt to the violence that marred Duterte›s war on drugs and perhaps release opposition figures that were imprisoned during his stay in office.

Bayuni should know it is patently unfair to be judged by the sins of our fathers, especially before one is given even a chance to prove himself as being made of better stuff.

Then there is the question of how Bayuni writes about Prabowo. I doubt Bayuni has ever bothered to talk to Prabowo’s peers in politics or those who served with him in the military. If were to do so, then a very different picture of the man would emerge as opposed to the worn out and gross caricatures that constantly appear in the mainstream media.

Instead of painting Prabowo with an authoritarian brush, Bayuni should ask himself about his performance since being appointed by Jokowi as minister of defence. He would learn, for example, that Prabowo has made major reforms in procurement and eliminating corruption while, at the same time, making significant progress in modernizing the Indonesian military.
