Jokowi Inaugurates Greater Jakarta LRT

Jakarta, IO – President Joko Widodo appealed to residents in the Jakarta, Bogor, Depok and Bekasi (Jabodebek) to take advantage of the Light Rail Transit (LRT) mass transportation system to reduce traffic congestion and air pollution.

This was conveyed by Jokowi when he inaugurated the integrated the Greater Jakarta LRT at the Cawang Station, Jakarta, Monday (28/8).

“We hope that people will flock to use the LRT, both from Cibubur and its surroundings as well as Bekasi and its surroundings, so we can avoid traffic jams and reduce pollution,” he stated.

Furthermore, Jokowi hopes that the 41.2-kilometer LRT line, which costed Rp32.6 trillion, can be used optimally so it can reduce the number of private vehicles entering Jakarta every day while simultaneously alleviate pollution and traffic jams.

“We are always named among the top 10 most congested cities in the world. Every day, 996 thousand vehicles enter Jakarta, every day. Therefore, traffic jams and pollution always plague Jakarta,” he said.

On the same occasion, Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi said the LRT system is part of the government’s efforts to realize integrated and environmentally friendly mass transportation.

“To realize a modern rail-based public transportation that is increasingly capable. We must be proud because this is being built by the nation’s sons and daughters,” said Budi. (bp)
