Jakarta officially ban use of ground water

Jakarta, IO – Jakarta Provincial Administration has officially banned the use of ground water in a number of locations such as Jakarta Industrial Estate Pulo Gadung (JIEP), East Jakarta; and Mega Kuningan, South Jakarta.

The ban is stipulated in Jakarta Governor Regulation 93/2021 on Groundwater Free Zones. Jakarta Water Resources Agency stated that the regulation has been in effect since August 1, per CNNIndonesia, Thursday (31/8).

One of the provisions is aimed at building with certain criteria including floor area of ​​at least 5,000 square meters and buildings with a minimum of eight floors.

Jakarta Clean Water Supply head Elisabeth Tarigan explained that the implementation of the regulations is closely related to city-owned tap water company PAM Jaya. According to her, areas that fall into zones where groundwater use is prohibited are currently served by PAM Jaya pipes.

As reported by Detikcom, the ban also aims to reduce people’s excessive use of ground water which have resulted in land subsidence and Jakarta sinking at a rate of 1-15cm each year. (un)
