Govt extends nationwide PPKM Level 1 as Covid-19 cases surge

Jakarta, IO – The government has yet again extended the implementation of Level 1 Public Activity Restrictions (PPKM) throughout Indonesia. The Home Ministry urged members of the public to abide by health protocols, reported Detik on Tuesday (8/11).

The extension is stipulate in ministerial regulation 47/2022 on PPKM across Java and Bali. The extension will last from November 8-21. Meanwhile, for regions outside Java and Bali, PPKM Level 1 will be imposed until December 5 based on ministerial regulation 48/2022.

The measure to extend the Covid-19 curbs was taken as Covid-19 cases surge recently, fuelled by Omicron XBB subvariant. However, several experts said that the prevalence of the subvariant in Indonesia is still relatively low. The government stated that PPKM will continue to be carried out during the Covid-19 pandemic.

“We urge the local governments not to be careless and continue to be alert to the threat of a spike in cases. Tighten the implementation of health protocols in the community, maximize the use of the PeduliLindung contact tracing app, and no less importantly, continue to push for the third dose (booster vaccination),” said Home Ministry director general for regional administration development Safrizal.
