Franz-Magnis Suseno (better known as Romo Magnis), a Catholic priest and scholar who was very close to Buya, was also saddened by the news. He recalled Buya Syafii Maarif as a “clear-headed” Muslim because he was both a devout Muslim while at the same time an individual who is proud of his nation and culture.
“Indonesian people can be proud to have a figure like Buya. He cared a lot about culture and was very active in advancing the nation and interfaith relation and harmony,” said Romo Magnis.
Romo Magnis said Buya Syafii’s way of life is worth emulating because he is someone rooted in his religion and was open to all people.
Buya Syafii Maarif will be buried at the Khusnul Khatimah cemetery, Kulon Progo, after ashar. Before that, a funeral prayer will be conducted at the Kauman Grand Mosque after Friday prayer. (un)
