Buya Syafii Maarif passes away, Indonesia loses a highly-respected unifying figure

Jakarta, IO – Indonesia is grieving. Prof. Dr. KH Ahmad Syafii Maarif, popularly known as Buya Syafii Maarif, died at the PKU Muhammadiyah Gamping Hospital, Yogyakarta at 10.15 WIB, Friday (27/5). The news of his passing was conveyed by the PP Muhammadiyah chairman Haedar Nashir via Muhammadiyah official website.

For many people, the “guru of the nation” born in 1935 has played a key role in maintaining the unity of the country. Leading a simple life, he always spread compassion and kindness to others. Buya Syafii is considered a role model whose attitude, enthusiasm and commitment should be emulated by the younger generation.

“Buya Syafii has inspired many people to consistently defend the truth, protect the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia, and maintain religious harmony,” said the Religious Affairs Minister Yaqut Cholil Qoumas in his official statement.

Alissa Wahid, daughter of former President Abdurrahman “Gus Dur” Wahid, has a similar impression. She talked about how important Buya Syafii was for Indonesia.
