Jakarta, IO – The National Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT) head Commissioner-General Mohammed Rycko Amelza Dahniel said 2023 is a historic year because Indonesia had zero terrorist attack, per detikcom, Wednesday (21/2).

“This is an extraordinary achievement, and a phenomenon that has attracted worldwide attention,” said Rycko. “Indonesia, which always records terrorist attacks every year and is a country that has active terrorist network cells did not see a single open terrorist attack throughout 2023.”

Rycko said this achievement is thanks to the support of the National Police (Polri), the Indonesian Armed Forces (TNI) and other relevant stakeholders. Nevertheless, Rycko asked all parties not to be complacent by this achievement, and to remain alert to any potential terrorist attacks in Indonesia because there are still terrorist network cells in the country and they continue to carry out consolidation and radicalization activities intensively.

This was evident from the increase in the number of perpetrators arrested along with the confiscation of a number of weapons, ammunition and explosives. Fundraising by terrorist groups is also said to continue.

“We must remain vigilant, what is happening now and the various open attacks are only phenomena that appear above the surface in an iceberg theory. Meanwhile, beneath the surface there is a trend of increasing consolidation and a process of radicalization,” he warned.

To solve this problem, Rycko said BNPT in 2024 will focus on building community resilience and ideology so that they do not get brainwashed by radicalization attempts. (un)
