Kanjuruhan tragedy

A deadly riot broke out after the match between Arema Malang vs Persebaya Surabaya at Kanjuruhan Stadium, Malang, East Java on October 1. In response, President Joko Widodo formed a joint independent fact-finding team (TGIPF) to investigate the tragedy that killed 135 spectators. Investigation concluded that the riot was sparked by tear gas fired by the security forces.

As panic ensued and the crowd scrambled for exit, a number of gates at the stadium were reportedly shut. This subsequently led to a stampede and asphyxia (a life-threatening condition when the body doesn’t get enough oxygen) as people were crushed.

Police have named six suspects: PT LIM president director Ahkmad Hadian Lukita, Arema FC chairman Abdul Haris and security officer Suko Sutrisno, Malang Police head of operations the Commissioner Wahyu Setyo Pranoto, Malang Police patrol unit chief AKP Bambang Sidik Achmadi, and East Java Police’s Mobile Brigade (Brimob) commander AKP Hasdarman.

G20 Summit

Another historical moment for Indonesia was the successful holding of the G20 Summit in Bali on November 15-16. G20 is a major forum for international economic cooperation, which consists of the world’s largest economies. As many as 17 state leaders attended and discussed various challenges amid challenging global dynamics, in particular the Russia-Ukraine war.

There were a number of key events during the summit, including the meeting between U.S. President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping, as well as an emergency meeting to discuss the stray missile incident that hit Poland. The summit also saw Indonesia accelerating its shift towards clean energy by signing a US$20 billion climate partnership with the U.S., Japan and other nations.
