Alert status issued for 4 volcanoes in Indonesia, community asked to be vigilant

Jakarta, IO – The Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Center (PVMBG) said the it has raised the status of four volcanoes in Indonesia to level III (the second highest level of the four-tier volcanic alert system) in September. The four volcanoes are Mount Ili Lewotolok in East Nusa Tenggara, Mount Anak Krakatau in Lampung, Mount Merapi in Yogyakarta, and Mount Semeru in East Java.

“Indonesia has 127 active volcanoes, of which there are more than 70 volcanoes in the very active category and the rest are less active, namely type B and C,” he said at a press conference on Thursday (6/10) as reported by Antara.

Thus, people who live and work near the four active volcanoes are advised to be vigilant of increased volcanic activities and need to heed the evacuation order from the local government or regional BPBD (disaster mitigation agency). Based on visual and instrumental observations, PVMBG noted that there are 17 volcanoes that began to show increased activity at level II.
