120-Hour Non-Stop Campursari Performance at TMII breaks MURI record

Jakarta, IO – Held for five days and six nights continuously, a.120-hour campursari performance in Yogyakarta was recorded as the longest performance in the world. This performance involved 465 artists from 31 campursari groups and various regions in Java, which was held at the Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (TMII) Yogyakarta Pavilion, Jakarta.

Campursari refers to music that combines gamelan, kroncong and dangdut with gendang (traditional drums).

The Indonesian World Records Museum (MURI) awarded three certificates of appreciation, presented to the Yogyakarta Regional Government, Praja Jogja, and the late campursari maestro Manthous, per Jogjaprov.go.id, Monday (6/11).

Chairman of the music performance Sastro Harjanto said that this event was aimed at breaking the previous records of 100 hours in Wonogiri and 90 hours in Gunungkidul in 2018.

“We are grateful that we are able to realize the dream and enthusiasm of the artists who have been working continuously to preserve the campursari traditional art which led to this epic collaboration,” he said.

Sastro, who is also the chairman of Praja Jogja, emphasized that the world must know the existence of campursari as one of Yogyakarta’s cultural identities as part of the efforts to preserve and popularize Indonesian culture.

“We hoped this new record can mark a momentum for the revival of Indonesian culture. Hopefully, campursari will become a heritage from Yogyakarta for the world,” said a representative from MURI. (bp)
