Workers hold Mayday Fiesta protest at GBK stadium

Jakarta, IO – Workers held peaceful protests to celebrate May Day at the Gelora Bung Karno (GBK) Stadium, Jakarta, Saturday (14/5). They marched from initial protest site at the Parliament Building. The protesters were led by Indonesian Trade Union Confederation (KSPI) president Said Iqbal.

Naming their action May Day Fiesta, they voiced their aspirations, including the rejection of the Ombibus Law or Job Creation Law and low living wage. During the event, Iqbal made 17 demands to the government.

Before entering the GBK Stadium, the organizing committee checked the contents of each participant’s backpack to prevent matches and cigarettes being brought inside the venue. Upon entry, the spread out to different sections of the stadium.

To ensure security and order, Polda Metro Jaya’s traffic division diverted the traffic around the area and deployed 5,260 personnel. (rgp)
