Two Unair students help FBI solve DMV phishing scam website

Jakarta, IO – Eko Mangku Cipto and Harianto Rantesalu, postgraduate students in police studies from Airlangga University (Unair), Surabaya, were invited to speak at the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) headquarters in Cleveland, Ohio. They succeeded in uncovering the DMV phishing scam of US government website committed by two Indonesian citizens.

According to Unair’s website, Wednesday (12/10), they spoke about the investigation techniques that led to the arrest of the two suspects.

“The case was handled by the FBI and East Java Police with the cybercrime team from the special crimes investigation directorate (Ditreskrimsus),” said East Java Police chief Nico Afinta.

“The stolen personal data, sold for US$100 each, was used to fraudulently claim the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) funds worth US$2,000 per person,” said Eko.

Their investigation also uncovered information that the perpetrators managed to obtain around 30,000 personal data through WhatsApp and Telegram conversations. (rr)
