Jakarta, IO – Mutiara Trenggalek Beach now has an underwater bioreeftek garden or artificial coral reefs. The initiative aims to save the underwater ecosystem and is expected to become a new tourist attraction.

Bioreeftek is a green and simple technology that utilizes natural coconut shell materials as a medium for attaching coral organism to become new individual colonies or reefs.

Trenggalek regent Mochamad Nur Arifin said the underwater park called Karang Tresno was built in stages by involving various parties, from the community, government and private sector.

“Tresno Coral Marine Park is expected to become a new tourist attraction in the waters of Prigi Bay,” he said, per Kompas Travel, Wednesday (26/7).

Arifin explained that the marine park has more than 300 coral reefs sown on coconut shells and planted at the bottom of Mutiara Beach waters. He also hoped it can contribute to the betterment of the local communities.

It will become a center for marine and conservation education. Tourists can also go snorkeling.  However, divers who are still unfamiliar are required to have a guide.

“So it’s not just professional divers, amateur or novice divers can also dive with supervision,” he said.

In order to facilitate access to this new destination, Arifin hoped the government can support the construction of facilities around the area.

“To make that happen, we have asked for additional support so the marine park can be easily accessed by tourists,” he said. (bp)
