Garuda explains sparks on plane’s wing during haj flight


Jakarta, IO – Indonesian flag carrier Garuda Indonesia president director Irfaniaputra said that the haj flight GIA 1105 incident when sparks were seen on one of the Boeing 747-400 plane’s wing will be temporarily grounded pending thorough investigation, per Detikcom, Thu (16/5).

The incident happened on Wednesday (15/5) at 3.30pm WITA. The plane was carrying 450 haj pilgrims from Makassar embarkation group. It was forced to turned back to Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport.

The plane landed at 5.07pm and all the pilgrims were taken back to the Sudiang Makassar Haj Dormitory. The plane was supposed to arrive at Prince Mohammad bin Abdulaziz International Airport, Medina at 9.10pm local time.

“The measure was taken as part of risk mitigation to ensure the operational safety and security aspects of the flight,” said Irfan. The group finally departed using a different plane which took off on Wednesday evening.
“As part of the operational mitigation measures for haj flights from Makassar embarkation so that they continue smoothly after this incident, Garuda Indonesia has prepared a backup aircraft allocation to ensure that the next departure of prospective haj pilgrims goes according to schedule,” he said.
