Jakarta, IO – A number of monks went on a meditation journey before lighting the lantern festival at Archipelago Lake, Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (TMII), Jakarta, Tuesday (14/5). This welcoming and sending off ceremony was held for 40 Tudong monks who will begin their journey on foot to Borobudur Temple to celebrate the 2024 Vesak Day.

A total of 40 monks from various Asean countries such as Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia took part in this procession. The welcoming event began with taking the Water Lantern at the Yogyakarta Pavilion. The water lanterns are filled with various wishes that depict the spirit of the Vesak celebration. The event then continued with interfaith prayers and the release of animals at the Archipelago Promenade.

The National Vesak Celebration falls on Thursday, May 23 and will be centered at the Borobudur Temple complex. The theme of this year’s celebration is “To Live Happily with All Beings and to Cultivate the Awareness Taught by the Buddha; Avoid Greed, Ignorance, Anger and Hatred.”

At the peak of the celebration, a series of events will be held between May 23-24, including the Vesak Carnival from Mendut Temple to Borobudur Temple, Vesak moment reflection, the Borobudur Temple prayer ceremony, the release of lanterns, mindful walking meditation to experience the sacredness of Borobudur Temple through Pradaksina ritual.
