Jakarta, IO – Tomohon Market in North Sulawesi officially bans the trade in dog and cat meat. This agreement was signed by the Tomohon City Administration and the traders.

The agreement aims to save cats and dogs from being butchered for human consumption, per CNNIndonesia, Saturday (22/7).

Humane Society International (HSI) campaign director Lola Webber said the organization has worked together with Animal Friends Manado Indonesia to help to shelter dozens of dogs and cats before they are ready for adoption.

Furthermore, Lola said the agreement required all remaining traders to permanently shut down the trade.

Apart from ending the horrific practices in Tomohon, Lola said the regulation signed by Tomohon Mayor Carrol Senduk was part of the preventive measures to curb the greater risk of rabies infection in Tomohon.

He said based on the results of their investigation, more than 130,000 dogs were slaughtered in the market every year.

“It is a huge victory for animal welfare and public safety that dogs and cats will never again be beaten and eaten in Tomohon,” said Lola.

“We hope this unprecedented deal will create the model for others to follow,” she said. (un)
