Jakarta, IO – Home Minister Tito Karnavian was appointed by President Joko Widodo as foreign minister ad interim to temporarily replace Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi who was on official trips to several African countries — Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique and South Africa — from 18 to 25 August 2023 ahead of BRICS Summit in Johannesburg, August 22-24.
BRICS is a trade alliance consisting of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.
This appointment is based on letter B-793/M/D-3/AN.00.03/08/2023 signed by State Secretary Pratikno on August 18, 2023, per Kemendagri.go.id, Saturday (18/8).

Previously, President Jokowi stated the potential for Indonesia to join the economic group of major developing countries. However, the official decision will be made when the summit takes place. (bp)
