Surabaya City administration mulls using Javanese script for names of government building

Jakarta, IO – The idea was proposed by Surabaya Mayor Eri Cahyadi. The implementation is expected to be completed before Heroes’ Day on November 10.

“I have asked the head of the Library Services to write Javanese script,” said Eri, per Detikcom, Thursday (14/9).

Eri said that the use of Hanacaraka script started on Javanese Script Day on September 8 in a bid to preserve history and culture.

“There is a saying ‘Wong Jowo ojok lali karo jasae’ meaning Javanese should not forget their history,” he said.

He said that the use of Javanese script will start at the Surabaya City Hall and other government agencies.

According to CNNIndonesia, Javanese script is a legacy of the Javanese written culture. It was used in several languages ​​including Madurese to Sanskrit. Javanese script is thought to be used by Javanese people since the 15th century in the form of literature or daily writing.
