Scourge of radicalism: police arrest 142 terrorists in 2023

Jakarta, IO – From January to December this year, the National Police (Polri) revealed that they had arrested 142 terrorism suspects. Thus, the public are advised to be more aware of the threat of radical ideology.

“Based on findings in the field and investigations into the suspects, we all must be more vigilant of this latent threat,” said Polri spokesperson Brig. Gen. Ahmad Ramadhan, per Medcom, Thu (21/12).

There are six threats that members of the public should be more aware to. First, propaganda and the spread of radical content via the internet and social media can be very effective in spreading terror.

“Radical content circulated via the digital space can influence individuals’ thoughts and views, even encouraging them to carry out acts of violence,” said Ramadhan.

Second, the movement of ISIS cells in Indonesia that are still active. “Even though the authorities have countermeasures in place, we still need to be alert to potential acts of terror,” he said.

Third, the danger of weapons being controlled by groups sympathetic to ISIS. Ramadhan said the possession of weapons by these groups in Indonesia poses a serious threat that needed to be promptly addressed.

“Preparation and training for acts of terror can take place anytime and anywhere. This shows the critical role of the public in informing the sale or circulation of illegal weapons,” he said.

Fourth, monitor online activity. Social media today are no longer merely a means of communication but can also be exploited as a medium to spread extremist ideologies.

“Irresponsible use of social media can threaten public security,” he said.

Fifth, strengthen education and religious understanding. Ramadhan said the importance of good education and sound understanding of religion and ideology in accordance with human values ​​and tolerance.

Sixth, cooperation with the authorities. Members of the public should not hesitate to build cooperation with the authorities in tackling the threat of terrorism. “Let’s work together to maintain peace and order in the country by becoming a society that is aware of the potential dangers of terrorism and is always ready to report suspicious activities to the authorities,” Ramadhan advised.
