Jakarta, IO – Jakarta Police Department arrested a woman from Peru identified as EAM, 39, for smuggling cocaine at Terminal 3 of Soekarno-Hatta International Airport on Tuesday (11/10).

Jakarta Police Narcotics Investigation Director Chief Commissioner Mukti Juharsa said the arrest was made after a Customs officer became suspicious of EAM. When examined, the object suspected of being illicit drug was found in her stomach.

“The modus operandi is by swallowing the drug, so the urine test came back positive. The X-ray results show what looks like capsules in the suspect’s stomach,” said Mukti, as reported by Tempo, Thursday (20/10).

EAM swallowed 116 cocaine capsules weighing 1.2 kilograms. The capsules came out after she defecated on October 13.

“This is incredible when it comes to cocaine, because it weighs 1.2 kilograms. The motive is to distribute it from Brazil and Peru to Indonesia via Jakarta,” said Mukti. Mukti explained that EAM was looking to sell the cocaine in several big cities in Indonesia, especially Jakarta and Bali.

She was charged with article 114(2) subsidiary article 115(1) subsidiary article 112(2) of Law 35/2009 on narcotics. She faces a minimum of six years in prison and a maximum of life sentence or death penalty. (un)
