KJRI Marseille advises Indonesian citizens to remain vigilant amid rioting in France

Jakarta, IO – The Indonesian Consulate General (KJRI) in Marseille urged Indonesian citizens in France to exercise a high degree of caution after the country is rocked by widespread riots. This appeal was conveyed via the consulate’s Instagram handle @indonesiainmarseille, Saturday (1/7).

“In line with the advice from the Indonesian Embassy in Paris regarding the security situation as a result of the shooting incident on June 27 in Nantere, the Indonesian Consulate General in Marseille also calls on all Indonesian citizens in the South of France to remain vigilant,” it posted.

Indonesian citizens are asked to follow the latest security situation in France and avoid areas where demonstrations take place or mass of people gather.

“As well as maintaining contact with relatives or colleagues. In the even of an emergency, call the emergency hotline for the protection of Indonesian citizens at +33 6 18 22 12 83,” it added.

Riots marked by vandalism, looting and arson have continued to occur in dozens of cities and municipalities throughout France, from Paris to Lyon, Strasbourg, Metz and Marseille.

As the protests entered the fourth day, thousands of public facilities and vehicles have been set ablaze and hundreds of buildings damaged and burned. In addition, nearly a thousand people have been arrested and 79 security personnel injured, per CNNIndonesia.

The riots were sparked by the fatal shooting of a teenager named Nahel (17) by members of the police force. The incident took place in a suburb of Paris on Tuesday, June 27.

According to a viral footage, two police officers were seen standing near a car. One of them then fired his at the driver. The incident brought to the fore long-simmering racial tensions and law enforcement treatment of minorities. (un)
