Jakarta, IO – Rahmat Erwin Abdullah, who competed in Class B, managed to set a new record for the clean and jerk and won gold in the men’s 81 kilogram class at the 2023 IWF World Weightlifting Championships in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

He was able to lift a dead weight of 209 kilograms. The previous record was set by a lifter from Bulgaria, Karlos Nasar, in 2021, per Beritasatu, Tuesday (12/9).

“Extraordinary. He is the only Indonesian lifter who managed to break the world record for the clean and jerk in two different classes, 73 kg and 81 kg. So he deserves the nickname The King of Clean and Jerk,” said Hadi Wihardja, the head of achievement development of the Indonesian Weightlifting Association (PABSI).

Rahmat is the first lifter from Indonesia to win gold at this year’s World Championships. Previously, Eko Yuli Irawan won two silvers in the 67 kilogram class. Therefore, Hadi is optimistic that Rahmat will be able to win a medal at the upcoming Asian Games.
