Jakarta, IO – The interim chairman of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), Nawawi Pomolango, said the decision of the South Jakarta District Court regarding the pretrial proposed by former Law and Human Rights deputy minister Edward “Eddy” Omar Sharif Hiariej was a form of “formal correction”, per Kompas.tv, Thu (1/2).

Nawawi said KPK would first hold a meeting to discuss the matter with its legal team and the agency’s deputy for enforcement and execution, especially the task force handling the case.

“We will study which formal aspects are considered wrong before deciding on the next legal steps,” said Nawawi.

According to KPK spokesperson Ali Fikri, the graft buster has named Eddy as a suspect because it has collected two pieces of key evidence. He also said that the pretrial decision concerned the formal side, not the main subject matter with regard to Eddy’s case.

South Jakarta District Court judge Estiono on Tuesday (30/1) decided that the KPK’s designation of Eddy as a suspect was invalid and does not have binding legal force based on Law 31/1999 on the eradication of corruption crimes in conjunction with Article 55 (1) and 64 (1) of the Criminal Code.

Eddy was accused of receiving Rp8 billion in bribes pertaining to an ownership dispute of PT Citra Lampia Mandiri (CLM), a nickel mining company in South Sulawesi. (at)
