Covid cases in Malaysia and Singapore increase, monitoring enhanced at SHIA

Jakarta, IO – Soekarno-Hatta International Airport will tighten the supervision and recommend passengers to wear masks again. This step was taken following the increase of Covid-19 cases in Malaysia and Singapore.

“In the airport premises, it will again be recommended to wear masks and maintain hygiene. All airlines are also advised to implement health protocols,” said SHIA Port Health Office (KKP) officer Naning Nugrahini, per detikcom, Wed (13/12).

Naning said vigilance needs to be stepped up because the Christmas and New Year holidays are approaching. The airport is also preparing health facilities such as posts and clinics to strengthen anticipatory measures.

“What we are doing regarding the current situation is to take precautionary and preventive measures by tightening supervision of travelers, both domestic and foreign, who enter through the airport,” she explained.

The airport has also coordinated with a team of doctors to carry out tracking and health tests for passengers and provide recommendations for treatment if positive cases are detected.

As of December 6, the Health Ministry reported that 30 to 40 daily cases. This has resulted in an increase of hospital occupancy rate.

The resurgence is caused by the Omicron XBB 1.5 subvariant, which is also the cause of the wave of Covid infections in Europe and the US. However, the rate is still much lower than during the initial wave of the pandemic, which hit 50,000 to 400,000 cases per week. (un)
