BMKG Predicts Six Regions Will Be Hit by El Nino-induced Drought

Jakarta, IO – The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) predicts that six areas in the southern part of the equator could be most affected by El Nino in the next week.

BMKG spokesperson Andri Ramdani explained the El Nino climate phenomenon will trigger decreased rainfall, per CNNIndonesia, Wednesday (16/8).

“And it is predicted that a moderate El Nino will occur until around October and start to decrease in intensity until December 2023,” said Andri.

Based on BMKG data, Andri said the start of a drought could be as soon as next week. “For now up to the next week there is potential for drought that must be watched out for,” he said.

Based on the BMKG analysis of the development of the dry season, Andri revealed that 63 percent of Indonesia’s territory has been affected by drought, including the southern region of Sumatra, Kalimantan, Java, Bali, Nusa Tenggara and Papua.

On the island of Sumatra, the provinces affected are Aceh, North Sumatra, most parts of Riau, Bengkulu, South Sumatra and West Sumatra. On Java, they are Banten, Jakarta, Central Java, East Java and most parts of West Java. The drought will also occur in Bali and Nusa Tenggara.

Meanwhile in Kalimantan, it will hit the southern part of West Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan, South Kalimantan and parts of East Kalimantan. In Sulawesi, regions likely to be impacted are North Sulawesi, Gorontalo, South Sulawesi. And further east, North Maluku, West Papua and parts of South Papua. (un)
