Jakarta, IO – Bank Indonesia (BI) withdrew the Rp500 coins issued in 1991 and 1997 and Rp1,000 coin issued in 1993 from circulation, effectively ending its use as legal tender.
The decision is contained in Bank Indonesia Regulation (PBI) 14/2023, which took effect from December 1, per CNBC Indonesia Fri (1/12).
BI spokesperson Erwin Haryono said that the withdrawal was carried out with a number of considerations. One of them is the long circulation period and the development of coin material technology.

People who still have these coins and want to exchange them can do so at any commercial banks or BI headquarters and representative Offices across Indonesia until December 1, 2033.
