BEM UI head suspended over sexual violence allegation

Jakarta, IO – Melki Sedek Huang, head of the University of Indonesia’s Student Executive Body (BEM UI) was suspended from his position because he is suspected of committing sexual violence, confirmed his deputy Shifa Anindya Hartono (Republika, 20/12).

Shifa explained that based on verified report, BEM UI is obliged by its statutes to carry out a further investigation process to come to a decision on whether the allegations against Melki is true or false. 

“Verification in question is an assessment and examination process that includes sufficient evidence and information to be processed in the investigation stage,” explained Shifa.

Furthermore, Shifa emphasized that all parties must respect the privacy of victim by not asking questions about the victim’s identity and the chronology of the incident. He also asked all parties to respect the ongoing investigation process.

News about Melki’s suspension was posted by @BulanPemalu via X (formerly twitter) on Monday (18/12).

Melki is known to have accepted the decision. However, he stated that he has never done what he was accused of.

He also stated that he did not know who reported him and the chronology of the accusation leveled against him. Melki said he only received information about the decision from Shifa. (un)
