Jakarta, IO – The Indonesian Employer Association (Apindo) predicts that the wave of layoffs will surge again in 2023. Apindo chairwoman Shinta Widjaja Kamdani said this was due to the increasing number of layoffs.

If previously layoffs were due to declining exports, this year the entry of illegal goods into the country has also added to the woes. According to Shinta, this will affect the domestic market, per Katadata, Tuesday (11/7).

“Continuing automation also affects our textile industry. So now it looks like it will increase,” she added.

Furthermore, Shinta said that the potential for layoffs this year could be greater than in 2022. However, the figure cannot be ascertained.

“We cannot say for sure (how much it will increase), but it appear to be larger,” she said.

Shinta stressed that a solution must be found immediately.

“We have to pay attention and find solutions to deal with the mass layoffs and the impacts it will have on the workforce,” said Shinta. (un)
