A look at makeshift settlements under the Inner City toll road

Jakarta, IO – As a metropolitan city, Jakarta is the magnet for people all over Indonesia to come and earn a livelihood. Those that cannot afford to buy or rent a house eventually shelter in places not fit for habitation. One of them is a makeshift settlement in West Jakarta, where they have lived for more than eight years under the Inner City Toll Road section.

To enter this settlement, adults must watch their head due to the cramped space. The conditions at that location were quite dense and crowded. Most of the dwellings were built from plywood and scrap wood.

Based on data from the Statistics Indonesia (BPS) in 2022, seven out of 10 households in live in indecent shelters. The percentage of livable houses is also not proportional to the number of migrant population that has kept increasing in the last three years, from 113,814 in 2020, to 139,740 in 2021 and 151,752 in 2022.
