Jakarta, IO – The management of the Ijen Caldera Nature Tourism Park (TWA) in Banyuwangi, East Java, closed a popular photo spot in the area after a Chinese tourist fell to her death while taking a photo at the scenic location.

The edge of the 100m-deep ravine has been cordoned off with police line. Sigit Wibowo, head of the Ijen TWA monitoring post, said the decision has been disseminated to tour guides, per Kompas, Thu (25/4).

A warning sign has also been erected to prevent tourists from approaching the location. Sigit cannot confirm how long the photo spot will be closed. “Whether it will be closed permanently or only temporarily remains to be seen,” he said.

Taufik Rohman, acting head of the Banyuwangi Culture and Tourism Department (Disbudpar), acknowledged that the location has become a favorite photo spot, especially for those wishing to take a picture of themselves as the sun rises in the horizon.

Disbudpar said it will figure out safety measures so people can still take picture there without risking themselves at this location so that it is safe for tourists. (un)
