Jakarta, IO – UNESCO designated three Indonesian historical archives as Memory of the World (MoW). This was marked by the awarding of certificates to the Indonesian Foreign Ministry (Kemlu) on Tuesday (4/7).

According to Kemlu’s official website, the three historical archives consist of Sukarno’s speech titled ‘To Build the World Anew’, The First Meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement, and Hikayat Aceh (The Chronicle of Aceh).

The awarding of the certificate was carried out after UNESCO established the status at the 216th UNESCO Executive Council Session in Paris, France, which run from May 10-14.

“It should also be remembered that this determination is not an end in itself, but rather part of joint efforts to safeguard our historical values for generations to come,” said Kemlu’s Information and Public Diplomacy director general Teuku Faizasyah.

In addition, he said that the designation is a symbol of Indonesia’s success in introducing the historical values in these documents to the world. “Hopefully this designation will serve as an impetus for UNESCO’s recognition of other important objects in Indonesia.”

Indonesia now owns 11 of the total 496 UNESCO MoW. Prior to this, eight Indonesian documents had already been designated as MoW, namely the VOC Archives, the Asian-African Conference Archives, the Diponegoro Chronicle, the Borobudur Conservation Archives, the Tsunami Archives, La Galigo, Nagarakartagama and Tale of Panji.
