Jakarta, IO – Secretary General of the United Nations Antonio Guterres praised Indonesia’s motto Bhinneka Tunggal Ika (Unity in Diversity). According to him, the motto has a deep meaning, which is to unite and preserve diversity.
Gutteres said this meaning has significance not only in the national context, but also Asean and even the world, per Katadata, Friday (8/9).
“Bhinneka Tunggal Ika symbolizes unity in diversity. This is not only Indonesia’s national motto, but it is also the key to building a better future for all of us,” said Guterres.
He also admitted that Asean’s role under Indonesia’s leadership has brought peace, especially to reduce tensions in the South China Sea and the Korean Peninsula by emphasizing dialogue.

Gutteres, who made his remarks at the 2023 Asean Summit, also highlighted the Myanmar conflict. He supports Asean to participate in solving this problem by bringing together all parties involved.
“We support ASEAN’s efforts to find a solution to the political situation in Myanmar. It is time for the international community to provide assistance to Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh,” he said. (un)
