Jakarta, IO – The informal sector is an important part of the Indonesian economy, including self-employed workers, casual laborers, freelancers, and those who work without regular payment, such as street sellers, motorcycle taxi drivers, construction workers and day-laborers.

According to data from Statistics Indonesia (BPS), the average monthly income of informal sector workers in 2019 was only around IDR 1.816 million. However, recent developments indicate that the informal sector continues to grow. According to a BPS report appearing in February 2023, the informal sector employs more than 60 percent of Indonesia’s workforce, while the formal sector employs the remaining 39 percent. The trend continues to grow, even though the government claims that the economy is showing signs of recovery and gradually reviving from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic impact.

The rise in the number of informal sector workers reflects the economy’s complexity and flexibility, as many people opt to work and earn their primary source of income from this informal sector.

Independent Observer managed to capture the activities of informal sector workers who are involved in the Harbor Road II Toll Road construction project in Ancol, Jakarta, which continues to be expedited. Completion of the project is anticipated by 2024.
