Suhartoyo Replaces Anwar Usman as Chief Justice of MK

Jakarta, IO – Constitutional Court (MK) judge Suhartoyo officially replaced Anwar Usman as the chief justice of MK. He was elected by unanimous decisions by the other eight judges in the bench.

Deputy Chief Justice of MK Saldi Isra explained that the decision was taken after a closed-door deliberation meeting which he chaired, per Detikcom, Thu (9/11)

Suhartoyo is a career judge from the Supreme Court (MA). He was born in 1959 and began his career as a judge in the Bandar Lampung District Court in 1986. He then served in the Curup District Court, Tangerang District Court and Bekasi District Court and was entrusted to become chief judge of the South Jakarta District Court in 2011.

He was then promoted to Denpasar High Court in 2014 and after just a few months in this position he was appointed by MA to become a constitutional judge.

In his role as a Constitutional Court judge, Suhartoyo heard the disputes over the 2019 presidential election. He was also involved in deciding over various judicial reviews, including of the Job Creation Law.

The election of a new chief justice of MK was held following the by the court’s ethics council (MKMK) decision on Tuesday (7/11) which dismissed Anwar Usman as the chief justice because he was proven to have committed serious ethics violations in relation to his recent controversial ruling permitting President Jokowi’s son to run as vice presidential candidate.
