Singapore to Import Half of Its Low-Carbon Electricity Needs from Indonesia

Jakarta, IO – Singapore’s Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry Tan See Leng said his country would import 4 Gigawatts (GW) of electricity by 2035.

Tan See Leng said that half of the need, namely 2 GW, would be supplied from Indonesia. The source will be taken from clean energy sources or New Renewable Energy (EBT), per CNBC Indonesia, Monday (11/9).

“EMA (Energy Market Authority Singapore) has given conditional approval to import 2 Gigawatts of low-carbon electricity from Indonesia to Singapore,” he said.

Tan said the agreement was also evident of the strong partnership between the two large countries in Southeast Asia.

“The fact that half of this amount will come from Indonesia is proof of a long-term and comprehensive partnership,” he said.

To meet their electricity needs, the Singapore and Indonesian governments last week also signed am MoU on low-carbon energy cooperation agreement and electricity interconnection between the two countries.

Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry secretary general Dadan Kusdiana said the MoU that has been agreed upon would be valid for five years and could be extended for the same period. (un)
