Jakarta, IO – Police have upgraded the investigation status of the smelter furnace explosion at PT Indonesia Tsingshan Stainless Steel (ITSS) in Morowali, Central Sulawesi which killed 21 people. The police have carried out a crime scene investigation (TKP) and examined witnesses at the location, said West Sulawesi Regional Police spokesperson Commissioner Djoko Wienartono, Wednesday (3/1/2024).
He revealed that as 27 witnesses had been questioned to unveil the cause of the deadly explosion. They consisted of employees, victims, management and experts.
Djoko said there has yet been any suspect. According to him, the joint team will still carry out an in-depth investigation to determine the suspect who will be announced later.

For the reference, the smelter furnace explosion at PT ITSS occurred on Sunday (24/12) at around 5.30am WITA on the second and third floors.
A total of 59 people were reported to have been impacted by the explosion, 21 of them died. Meanwhile, there are still 38 workers with serious and minor injuries who are still undergoing treatment. The death toll consisted of 13 Indonesian workers and eight Chinese workers. (rr)
