Named a suspect in an extortion case, KPK chief resigns

Jakarta, IO – The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) chairman Firli Bahuri stated that he is resigning from his position after being named a suspect by the Jakarta Metropolitan Police Department.

Firli stated that he is ending the term of office he has held since December 20, 2019 in a letter to President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo dated December 18, per bisnis, Fri (22/12).

“I am ending my duties as chairman of KPK. And I declare that I am quitting and have no intention of extending my term of office,” said Firli.

The retired police officer apologized for not being able to complete his term at KPK. He also asked President Jokowi to accept his resignation request.

“I apologize to all Indonesian people because I was unable to complete my term and the extension,” said Firli.

“Give me, my children and my wife, the opportunity to turn a new chapter as a retired police officer, as an ordinary citizen, and also as son of the Indonesian nation who loves his country.”

Firli was named a suspect in alleged extortion of former agriculture minister Syahrul Yasin Limpo. He is also suspected of receiving bribes and gratifications relating to cases being investigated at the Agriculture Ministry. Firli is also known to have been involved in three ethics violation cases which are now being tried by KPK Supervisory Board. (un)
