Jokowi to preside over 12 meetings at the 34th Asean Summit in Jakarta

Jakarta, IO – President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo is scheduled to preside over 12 meetings at the 43rd Asean Summit to take place at Jakarta Convention Center (JCC) on September 5-7, said Foreign Ministry’s Asean Cooperation director general Sidharto R Suryodipuro, per Setkab.go.id, Wednesday (23/8).

The series of meetings in plenary and retreat format include summits with China, South Korea, Japan, US, Canada, India and Australia, as well as Asean Plus Three Summit, East Asia Summit (EAS) and the Asean-UN Summit. 

“The president will also lead non-conventional activities, such as the opening of the 43rd Asean Summit, Asean Indo-Pacific Forum, gala dinner and social events which will take place on September 7, as well as the closing ceremony and handover of the chairmanship to Lao PDR,” he said.

On the sidelines, he will hold bilateral meetings with the visiting heads of states leaders, concluded by a press statement by the president on September 7.

As many as 27 state leaders and heads of international organizations are expected to attend including those from EAS, the Pacific Island Forum (PIF), the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA), and executive directors of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank.

In line with the theme “Asean Matters: Epicentrum of Growth”, the events are expected to facilitate the achievements and foundations of the Asean 2045 vision and strengthen Asean institutions.

“This is the fourth time we are leading Asean and we want to lay the foundation for strategic Asean cooperations going forward,” he said. (rr)
