Its chief named a suspect, KPK apologizes to public

Jakarta, IO – Deputy chair of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), Nurul Ghufron, apologized to the public after the anti-graft agency’s chief Firli Bahuri was named a suspect in an extortion case by the Jakarta Metropolitan Police Department (Polda Metro Jaya).

Ghufron admitted that the incident has caused furor in the society and tarred the reputation of the agency, eroding the public trust in KPK, per Antaranews, Fri (24/11).

“As member of the leadership, I am also responsible and therefore apologize to the entire nation for this incident,” said Ghufron.

He also promised that his institution would be rectified and taken as a lesson learned for internal evaluation and future improvement.

“We are committed to making required improvements and are open to receiving suggestions from the communities,” added Ghufron.

He went on to say that KPK belongs to the people and the state and hope the public will continue to support KPK in carrying out its mandate to eradicate corruption.

“That hope still exists and will continue to exist and grow if we work together to maintain and care for the hope of a just and prosperous Indonesia free from corruption,” he said.

Polda Metro Jaya previously named Firli as a suspect in the alleged extortion case against former agriculture minister Syahrul Yasin Limpo (SYL), Wed (22/11).

The police said they has confiscated a number of key pieces of evidence related to the handling of a corruption case within the Agriculture Ministry (Kementan) in 2021 when Firli was in charge. (un)
