Interpol to help repatriate a hate speech, blasphemy suspect who lives as a scavenger in the U.S.

The Criminal Investigation Bureau (Bareskrim) named Saifuddin Ibrahim as a suspect on March 30, 2022. He was charged with violating Article 45A(1) in conjunction with Article 28(1) of Law 19/2016 on amendments to Law 11/2008 on Information and Electronic Transactions.

Saifuddin is alleged to have committed hate speech that touch on tribal, religious, racial and societal group issues, defamation, religious blasphemy, false reporting, and deliberately causing public disturbance.

The case started after Saifuddin sent a complaint regarding a number of situations concerning religious life in Indonesia to Religious Affairs Minister Yaqut Cholil Qoumas via social media. He also spoke about Islamic boarding school curriculum and associated it with radicalism, as well as making suggestion to delete 300 verses from the Quran. (rr)
