Jakarta, IO – United Development Party (PPP) central executive board chairman Achmad Baidowi reveals why his party still wants to accept ex-chairman Muhammad “Romy” Romahurmuzy, despite him having been convicted in a corruption case. Romy now serves as the party’s Advisory Council chairman, reported Pikiran Rakyat, Wednesday (4/1).

Baidowi said Romy has the right to return to politics because there is no court decision that revoked this right. Baidowi further said that Romy had been a free man for three years. Based on the Supreme Court’s (MA) cassation ruling, he was sentenced to one year in prison.

In addition, the charge brought against him was four years, less that the 5 years threshold that will bar a convict from being involved in politics again.

“Based on the Constitutional Court’s decision, those who are [charged] for less than 5 years may still be nominated as candidates for members of the House, let alone become party administrators,” he explained.
